Will Washington be a Leader or a Follower?
Washington wolf management is at a crossroads. If the Fish & Wildlife Commission accepts a pending rulemaking petition, it could lead the nation in science-based wolf management. On the other hand, if the Commission approves a Department proposal to down-list wolves from state “endangered” to “threatened,” it will be starting down the path set by neighboring Idaho, stunting wolf recovery by removing protections against human-caused mortality.
Claire Loebs Davis is the founder and board president of Washington Wildlife First, an organization dedicated to reforming Washington’s management of its fish and wildlife. She also founded and serves as the managing partner for Animal & Earth Advocates, a Seattle-area law firm that brings public interest litigation on behalf of animals, wildlife, and the environment. She was co-counsel for the successful 2021 lawsuit to stop Wisconsin’s second wolf hunt in a year, and has been primary counsel on several unsuccessful (but nonetheless valuable) lawsuits challenging the lethal removal of wolves in Washington.
